Many people have air conditioners and they want to make sure that they are keeping their air conditioner running for as long as possible, since it’s such a huge investment. The length of time that an air conditioner will last will depend on a variety of things like:
- How much it’s used
- How well its maintained
- Its efficiency
Below are five tips that you can use to help your air conditioner last longer and to get more use for your money.
1. Regularly Change the Air Filter in the Unit
The job of the air filter will be to catch the large pollutants in the air to stop them from causing harm to the air conditioner. So your air filter is going to get dirty when you’re using the AC unit. When it becomes too dirty, the filter can actually start suffocating the air conditioner. This makes it work much harder and can shorten the life span of the air conditioner.
Replacing your air filter on a regular basis can help the unit last much longer, avoiding the problem. The frequency with which you change the filter is going to depend on the air filter type you’re using. If it’s a fiberglass filter, it should be checked once a month and replaced when dirty. If you have a different type of filter, follow the recommendations of the manufacturer.
2. Trim Any Bushes Close to the AC Unit
You might have shrubs or bushes that are growing around your AC unit so that you’re hiding your unit. But there’s a problem with doing this. It can hurt the life of your AC by reducing the airflow to the unit, a lot like an air filter that dirty will. Trim the shrubs and bushes so there’s a space of at least 18 to 24 inches surrounding your AC.
3. Make Sure Your Vents are Open and Clear
Before you turn on the AC when summer is coming, be sure there isn’t anything in front of your vents. Curtains, furniture, and other types of things that are blocking your vents often will make the unit run a lot longer as well as more frequently so that your home is staying cool.
4. Have a Tune Up Once a Year
Just like an automobile, the AC is going to need maintenance regularly so that it’s always running efficiently as years go by. Having an HVAC professional come by and do the tune up is going to help your unit last longer by doing things such as cleaning its coils.
These are the five things that you can do to help your air conditioner last longer. Remember that your AC is nothing more than a machine. It needs certain things to keep running well and to keep your home cool.
