8 Steps to Take When the Coolant’s Low in Your AC Unit

Have you noticed that your central AC isn’t cooling your house well enough? Chances are that you may need more Freon in the system. This refrigerant helps with your air conditioning evaporating the internal heat so that the air that is being expelled is cool. You might have a leak that is allowing your Freon to escape.

If you do have a leak in your AC, you’re going to have to seal it, replace your Freon, and then replenish your system’s refrigerant. This process is known as recharging.

What Goes Wrong When Your Homes Air Filter is Clogged?

Clogged Air Filter

What Goes Wrong When Your Homes Air Filter is Clogged?

So what is the importance of your air filter?

Does it really matter? Yes! Preventative maintenance can extend the life and efficiency of your HVAC unit.

When you have a clogged air filter, the air handler has to work a lot harder because the air flow has been blocked. This means that you are using more energy in your home and increasing your electric bill.

Along with making your home’s utility bill more expensive, this reduction in air flow through your home’s cooling and heating system can overheat and shut off too fast. This results in your home not cooling down.

Problems Caused by Dirty Condenser Coils

AC Maintenance Tips

AC Maintenance Tips

What is an air condenser coil? Air moves across your “indoor coil unit” where heat is absorbed into the refrigerant in the coil and circulated, through tubing, to your “outside coil unit” aka “condenser coil”.

The fan helps to disperse the hot air from your house to the outside air by blowing it across the condenser coil. As noted, the air conditioner actually “removes” heat, it does not “add” cool air.

A dirty condenser coil creates a number of troubling problems:

1. Your air conditioners energy efficiency drops dramatically

2. Your air conditioner is no longer able to cool your home effectively.

3. Your energy consumption goes up significantly while your cooling efficiency and effectiveness drops like a stone.

4. The life of your air conditioner unit is reduced.

5. Cooling efficiency can drop over 30%.

Quick Tip: As little as 0.042 inch or 1/23 of an inch of dirt can reduce cooling efficiency up to 21%

As you can see, the investment you make to maintain your air conditioner system, such as having your condenser coil cleaned, is well worth the peace of mind it provides you.

Repairs, by their nature, are often unexpected and at the worst possible time. Before the hot summer months, it is highly recommended to consider having a professional, HVAC Technician come out to clean the coils. This strategy will not only head off a potential problem, it will also afford you a timely appointment during a lower demand time.

How Does an Air Conditioner Work?

air_conditioning_system

Air Conditioning System

Air conditioners and refrigerators work the same way. Instead of cooling just the small, insulated space inside of a refrigerator, an air conditioner cools a room, a whole house, or an entire business.

Air conditioners use chemicals that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and back again. This chemical is used to transfer heat from the air inside of a home to the outside air.

The machine has three main parts. They are a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator. The compressor and condenser are usually located on the outside air portion of the air conditioner. The evaporator is located on the inside the house, sometimes as part of a furnace. That’s the part that heats your house.

The working fluid arrives at the compressor as a cool, low-pressure gas. The compressor squeezes the fluid. This packs the molecule of the fluid closer together. The closer the molecules are together, the higher its energy and its temperature.

The working fluid leaves the compressor as a hot, high pressure gas and flows into the condenser. If you looked at the air conditioner part outside a house, look for the part that has metal fins all around. The fins act just like a radiator in a car and helps the heat go away, or dissipate, more quickly.

When the working fluid leaves the condenser, its temperature is much cooler and it has changed from a gas to a liquid under high pressure. The liquid goes into the evaporator through a very tiny, narrow hole. On the other side, the liquid’s pressure drops. When it does it begins to evaporate into a gas.

As the liquid changes to gas and evaporates, it extracts heat from the air around it. The heat in the air is needed to separate the molecules of the fluid from a liquid to a gas.

The evaporator also has metal fins to help in exchange the thermal energy with the surrounding air.

By the time the working fluid leaves the evaporator, it is a cool, low pressure gas. It then returns to the compressor to begin its trip all over again.

Connected to the evaporator is a fan that circulates the air inside the house to blow across the evaporator fins. Hot air is lighter than cold air, so the hot air in the room rises to the top of a room.

There is a vent there where air is sucked into the air conditioner and goes down ducts. The hot air is used to cool the gas in the evaporator. As the heat is removed from the air, the air is cooled. It is then blown into the house through other ducts usually at the floor level.

This continues over and over and over until the room reaches the temperature you want the room cooled to. The thermostat senses that the temperature has reached the right setting and turns off the air conditioner. As the room warms up, the thermostat turns the air conditioner back on until the room reaches the temperature.

Heat Pump

Imagine that you took an air conditioner and flipped it around so that the hot coils were on the inside and the cold coils were on the outside. Then you would have a heater. It turns out that this heater works extremely well. Rather than burning a fuel, what it is doing is “moving heat.”

A heat pump is an air conditioner that contains a valve that lets it switch between “air conditioner” and “heater.” When the valve is switched one way, the heat pump acts like an air conditioner, and when it is switched the other way it reverses the flow of the liquid inside the heat pump and acts like a heater.

Heat pumps can be extremely efficient in their use of energy. But one problem with most heat pumps is that the coils in the outside air collect ice. The heat pump has to melt this ice periodically, so it switches itself back to air conditioner mode to heat up the coils. To avoid pumping cold air into the house in air conditioner mode, the heat pump also lights up burners or electric strip heaters to heat the cold air that the air conditioner is pumping out. Once the ice is melted, the heat pump switches back to heating mode and turns off the burners.

Top 5 Air Conditioning (AC) Maintenance Benefits

A/C Maintenance Benefits

A/C Maintenance Benefits

Maintaining your homes air conditioning system will provide you with a number of benefits that can save you time and money. Routine maintenance will keep your A/C system running efficiently and take less time to perform than having to replace the entire A/C unit. Here are the top five benefits of air conditioning maintenance:

A/C Maintenance Benefits

Longer system life – Regular ac maintenance on your system will prolong the life of your air conditioning unit by preventing major breakdowns. Checking the A/C system for any wear on the pump, belts and other parts allows you to keep the system running at peak performance.

Consistent home comfort – Having your air conditioning system break down in the middle of the summer heat is something you want to avoid. The best way to keep the unit running is by conducting routine maintenance. This will keep your home comfortable even when it is hot outside.

Reduced repair costs –
It will cost you less to replace a pump or A/C belt than it would to have to replace the entire unit because of severe damage. One of the benefits of air conditioner maintenance is being able to locate problems and repair them before they become larger issues.

Reduced energy costs –
An air conditioner that runs efficiently costs less to operate than one that is having problems. When the unit is under stress from malfunctioning parts or worn belts, it takes more power to operate, costing you more on your energy bill.

Improved indoor air quality – Dirty components and clogged air filters are just some of the things that can cause poor air quality in your home, resulting in allergies and other breathing problems. Improved air quality is one of the best benefits of air conditioning maintenance.

Tip: You can use this checklist to help determine if it’s time to replace your air conditioner or heat pump.

Repair Cost: You might think a few A/C parts or a new A/C compressor will do the trick, but if the cost of repair is approximately 30 to 50 percent of the estimated cost of a new unit, replacement probably makes sense. Also, if your equipment has been prone to problems or you have reason to expect problems, replacement may be in order. Also, new equipment is likely to be a better bet if you own R22 equipment, which is being phased out.

Warranty: Consult the Terms and Conditions of your equipment warranty before making repair or replacement decisions. Generally, replacement parts fall under the original warranty, so they are only warranted as long as your original warranty is in effect. Repair labor is often not covered by your warranty.

Equipment Age: How well your equipment ages depends on how well you maintain it and the operating demands you place on it. In general, if your A/C or heat pump is over 8- to 10-years old, it’s best to replace.

Moving or Staying: If you plan to move in the near future, repair is often the best choice. However, if you plan on staying in your home, it’s wise to invest in an energy efficient A/C -heat pump system that has the capacity to cool your home efficiently and cost effectively.

How Well Is Your Existing Equipment Working: Are your electric bills too high? Does your system keep your home cool enough?

Check Your Heating System

Check your heating system in Florida

Port Charlotte: Check Your Heating System!

Port Charlotte, FL – Despite popular belief it does get cold enough in Florida during the winter to require turning on your heater.

Autumn is the perfect time to Schedule Routine Maintenance on your Home Heating System to ensure that it is running efficiently, and effectively during the winter.

Check Your Heating System

1. Replace your heater’s air filter monthly. Since your heater will have to work less hard, it will run more efficiently. Cleaning and removing dust from vents or along baseboard heaters will have the same effect.
2. If your heating system is old, you might consider updating it. A new modern HVAC, is probably 50 percent to 60 percent efficient than older models. Replacing an old heating system can cut your electrical use nearly in half!
3. Make sure all hearing vents are opened and unblocked by furniture or other items. This will ensure that the air is evenly distributed through the home.

Heater Smells like Something is Burning

The most likely scenario is your dirty heating element is burning lint or hair. Dirty heating elements are the main reason they burn out prematurely and can be dangerous. Carefully vacuum the dirt, dust, lint and hair from the unit. Please make sure power is turned off to the electric heater at the service panel before opening up the unit for cleaning.

Why Is Your Central Air Conditioner Leaking Water

Why Is Your Central Air Conditioner Leaking Water

Clogged Drain Line

Clogged Drain Line

One reason why your central air conditioning could be leaking water is that the drainpipe is clogged or blocked.

Central air conditioners create a lot of condensation during the home cooling process so there is a drain hole for the removed water on your unit.

The condensation is usually drawn down a condensation line, which drains to the outside of the home. Sometimes this can get blocked with dirt or other debris. Check the tubing to see if this is the case.

The drain line should be cleaned out before the beginning of every season. Clear the blockage if there is one, as it will allow the water to properly exit the condenser pan and you should see the pooling stop. If not, algae may appear in the line, causing it to clog and leaks to occur.

Air Conditioning Repair

Save time, money and frustration by having Dales Air Conditioning clean your blocked drain line. We will clean out the drain line, as well as other troubleshooting that will stop any leaks from developing in your central air conditioning.

Attic Insulation Port Charlotte

Attic Insulation Port Charlotte

If your Port Charlotte home is more than 30 years old, it may have been built without ceiling insulation. Dales Air Conditioning customers who improved their ceiling insulation see increased savings on their electricity bill (over the year) depending on their previous level of insulation.

Insulation is measured in R-values—the higher the R-value, the better your walls and roof will resist the transfer of heat. DOE recommends ranges of R-values based on local heating and cooling costs and climate conditions in different areas of the nation.

One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic.

Adding insulation to your home can reduce heating and cooling costs. Homes built after 1982 are required to have R-19 insulation, which is the level FPL recommends. However, if your home was built before 1982, you may benefit from adding insulation.

If you are looking to save money with a more efficiently insulated, green home then Dales Air Conditioning today for a free consultation.

Benefits of UV Home Air Purification

Ultraviolet Home Air Sanitizer

Ultraviolet Home Air Purification System

Ultraviolet Home Air Purification

Ultraviolet home air sanitizer uses ultraviolet light to neutralize airborne bacteria, molds, and dust mites.

We spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors and according the the Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside our homes is up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. If too little microorganisms can collect to levels that pose health and comfort problems. This problem can be especially serious in energy efficient homes built in the last twenty years. These homes may not allow enough air changes, keeping contaminated air in and fresh air out.

Purify Your Home with UV Light

Installed in the main supply or return duct of a forced air heating or air conditioning system, UV Home Air Sanitizer operates continuously to purify the air in your home 24 hours a day. Dales Air Conditioning will install a powerful ultraviolet (UV) light, which sterilizes and reduces airborne microorganisms as they pass through the system.

Benefits of Air Purification

The two primary benefits to using UV light are disinfecting air and preventing growth of mold. The UV light radiates a surface to keep mold from growing in that area and disinfects the air stream as it passes through the HVAC system.

In one pass over the UV lamp, a high disinfection rate is not normally accomplished in the air stream. However, the home’s air is recirculated more than 50 times a day during normal operation of the heating or air conditioning system. Continued exposure to UV reduces airborne contamination, improving the indoor air quality of the entire home. With repeated circulation of air through the system, a major disinfection rate is accomplished, making use of UV light very positive.

UV Whole House Air Purifier

UV whole house air purifier helps protect your most valuable asset, your family’s health. Ultraviolet purification helps reduce the symptoms of allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems resulting in less work and school missed due to illness.

10 Ways To Save Energy When Using Air Conditioning

stay-cool-in-summer-save-money-electricity-billLiving in Port Charlotte, Florida you quickly learn the comfort you feel from having air conditioning in your home. Nothing is better on a hot summers day in Charlotte County than coming home to a nice and slightly chilly home.

But one thing that might not be as enjoyable is an increase in your electricity bill from running your air conditioning unit throughout the day. To help keep your bills and your energy consumption as low as possible, check out the 10 tips below:

1. Warmer At Night Is OK: During the night time hours you don’t require the same level of conscious cool. Try turning your AC down (so it is running less) during your sleep hours or an hour or two before bed.

2. Use Window or Portable Units: If you aren’t into cooling your whole home, try using a portable unit to cool just the area you’ll be working in. They use up to 50% less energy than a larger central air unit would to cool off the same space.

3. Close Off Vents: Try closing all the vents in the less visited areas of your home like your closet, bathroom and unoccupied bedrooms.

4. Service Your AC Unit: Some basic maintenance might be all your air conditioner needs, but most will greatly benefit from a good hosing out, especially if you’re plagued with pesky trees like Cottonwoods that drop seeds which stick to the filters and make the unit work 15% harder!

5. Check and Clean Your Ducts: Making sure the areas where your ducts run through parts of your home without air conditioning (like the attic) are properly insulated will keep the air coming in as cool as it can be. Paying for half cool air isn’t anyone’s idea of money well spent!

6. Rearrange Your Furniture: Furniture that obstructs air conditioning vents means you could be cooling the back of a chair or the bottom side of your sofa and although it might appreciate the thought, we’re pretty sure you’d rather have that chill instead. Although they make plastic pieces for your vents to help force air in the right direction, the easiest way is to just rearrange things for awhile!

7. Try 78 Degrees: 78 degrees is a good point for an air conditioner to run at its optimal performance level. Think of it as a car on cruise control headed across the flat Midwest prairie. It’s not chugging along going up hill, and is just is plugging away, steady as she goes. Taking your temperature even 5 degrees lower can make your air conditioner use up to 40% more energy!

8. Lighting: Turning lights off can help reduce your heat, but paying attention to how much light you let in from open windows can also play a significant role. Although it might neurotic to open and close your windows everyday with the changing of the sun, it makes a huge difference in how much heat your bought air is competing against.

9. Is Anyone Home?: If you can, while you’re away turn your AC up to 85 and make sure the windows and drapes are closed. Although it will be hot for a few minutes when you come home, the blinds will help keep out the sun out (allowing existing cool to stay that way for as long as possible) and the heat won’t be so substantial that your unit will have to work overtime to cool things back off.

10. Don’t Forget The Fan: We rely on air conditioners to keep things cool, but having the help of a few supplemental fans doesn’t hurt. Using them to circulate the cool air means you don’t need quite as much pumped into the room. They use less energy than your air conditioner unit, so having them around as backup is a great idea.

This Autumn Inspect your Florida Home Heating System

Check your heating system in FloridaAutumn is the perfect time to perform routine maintenance on your home’s heating system to ensure that it is running efficiently, and effectively during the winter. Despite popular belief it does get cold enough in Florida during the winter to require turning on your heater.

During the month of November, Dale’s Air Conditioning and Heating is running a Heating System Inspection Special, for the residents of Port Charlotte Florida.

Dale’s Heating Inspection Special

Saving money and energy is easy through Dales Heater Tune-Up Special. Services are provided by our certified technicians, who ensure your Heater system is tuned for maximum efficiency.
